The high gate of Riquewihr, the Dolder was built in 1291 at the same time as the first fortified enclosure. It served as both a defensive tower, a watchtower, and a belfry. The interior facade, facing the city, displayed an arrangement of wooden beams and four cantilevered floors. Its first level was one of the starting points of the rampart walk, which circled the city at the top of the battlements.
