A turtle concentrated in southern France

The European Pond Turtle (Emys orbicularis) is a small carnivorous turtle of about 6 inches (15 cm) recognizable by its dark, smooth, and rather flat shell sometimes punctuated with yellow and its webbed legs with strong claws. It is the only species of freshwater turtle in mainland France where its populations are mainly concentrated in the southwest and the southeast, as here in the Var department. Particularly attached to aquatic environments (ponds, old gravel pits, streams, etc.), the European Pond Turtle comes back to land to find spawning sites.
