An elephant head in the water

Maupassant described the tip of the Porte d'Amont (Upstream Gate) as an elephant's head plunging its trunk into the water of Étretat. Here, the cliff is gentler and peaks 127 ft (39 m) above sea level before rising to 262 ft (80 m). At the very top of the cape was the Neo-Gothic Notre-Dame chapel, destroyed by the Germans in 1942. The site also housed a monument to the glory of aviators Nungesser and Colli who left in 1927 to cross the Atlantic. The chapel was rebuilt in 1950 and the memorial in 1962.
