The coconut groves - like that of Kurine here near Shabadran Bay - cover a large part of the eastern coast of Maré. The multiple uses of the different parts of the coconut palm remain largely exploited by the Kurine tribe even if the food and vegetable crops have diversified. In addition to the traditional tubers (yams, taros, sweet potatoes), the island has effectively become one of the main suppliers of papayas, mandarins, oranges and avocados to Nouméa.
