The Plain of Alsace which extends beyond Haut-Koenigsbourg castle, forms a wide strip of fertile land where crops are very varied. There are cereals (mainly corn), sauerkraut cabbage, tobacco (2,500 tons of Virginia tobacco each year) and beets. Cattle breeding, milk production and its derivatives are also very present. The wine-growing foothills, between the Vosges and the Alsace plain, are backed by the wooded slopes of the Vosges, whose peaks are punctuated by nearly a hundred fortified castles built in the Middle Ages.
