A tapestry framed by friezes

The central band of the Bayeux Tapestry is framed by friezes, each approximately 2.75 inches (7 cm) wide. These borders feature real animals like birds, lions, dogs, and deers or imaginary ones like griffins and centaurs. Other border scenes show strange human figures, corpses, and parts of the human body and could allude to certain moral behaviors. Through 58 scenes dedicated to the Norman conquest of Anglo-Saxon England, the tapestry depicts 626 figures as well as horses, dogs, ships, trees, and buildings. While in an almost perfect state of preservation, the Bayeux Tapestry has, however, lost its final part.
