The benefactress waters and the high mountains surrounding Cauterets in the Hautes-Pyrénées department make it a sought-after spa resort. The town has retained typical 19th-century architecture with Belle Époque buildings such as the Grand Hôtel d'Angleterre and the Grand Hôtel Continental. Cauterets' thermal baths are specialized in the treatment of the respiratory tract and in rheumatology. Another specialty of the city, the berlingot – a colorful and tangy candy – was once used by spa guests to reduce the taste of sulfur water.
