Close to the imposing Puy de Sancy that dominates it 6,187 ft (1,886 m) above sea level, the resort of Mont-Dore was quickly frequented by the jet set from 1936. Its cable car, the first in the Massif Central and almost climbing to the summit, contributed widely to its fame. It was financed by the aviator Dieudonné Costes, winner of the crossing of the Atlantic from East to West in 1930. An electric funicular built in 1898 and listed as a Historical Monument also leads to the Pic du Capucin (4,816 ft / 1,468 m).
