Camargue horses are sturdy animals that stand between 4.4 and 4.8 ft (1.35 and 1.48 m) tall and weigh between 661 and 881 lbs (300 and 400 kg) when fully grown. Today characterized by their white coat, they had bay, chestnut, or black coats until the 20th century. The evolution of the selection of light-colored specimens derives from the cleaning up of the marshes and the decrease in the various biting insects that swarmed in the region. The double concern for standardization of the groups of horses and demarcation from the black coat of the bulls contributed to the aesthetic determination of such selection.
