A demographic and urban revival

The core of the village of Collobrières was built from the 10th century onwards, as evidenced by the existence of a medieval quarter at the foot of the old Saint-Pons Church. Over the centuries, the village has continued to grow, and architecturally homogeneous neighborhoods from the 15th, 18th, and 19th centuries aggregated to its historic center. In the 19th century, the development of the cork industry led to a sharp population increase, with Collobrières having almost 2,500 inhabitants in 1876. The industrial decline and rural exodus at the start of the 20th century however caused a socioeconomic decline. The population fell to 1,000 inhabitants in 1950, before experiencing a resurgence since the end of the 20th century thanks to the development of tourism and urban sprawl.
