Close to the Mont-Dore resort, on the southern slope of Puy de Sancy, the Chastreix-Sancy Nature Reserve spreads out over 4,682 acres (1,895 hectares). Hikers can come across abundant mountain fauna and more than 130 species of birds. More than 1,050 species have been identified overall, 121 of which are protected. Three paths of short walks run through the reserve in addition to the GR4 and the GR30 hiking trails. In winter, it also lends itself to Nordic skiing or hiking.
