The biological reserve of Sainte-Marguerite Island was created by a decree of September 26, 2006. It corresponds to the public forest of the island that represents more than 375 acres (152 ha), including the 10 acres (4 ha) salt water pond of Batéguier. Unlike integral biological reserves where free rein is given to the spontaneous dynamics of habitats, the reserve of Sainte-Marguerite Island is subject to management. It includes administration and forest exploitation compatible with the preservation of habitats and species and the improvement of the general biological diversity of the site, which welcomes numerous visitors.
