The Arc de Triomphe of Paris was built between 1806 and 1836. From the Place Charles-de-Gaulle, a wide perspective of 2.17 miles (3.5 km) long extends towards the south-east. It runs down the Avenue des Champs Elysées, across the Place de la Concorde, through the Tuileries Gardens and stops at the Cour Napoléon of the Louvre Museum. In the aftermath of the French defeat in January 1871, Chancellor Otto von Bismarck entered Paris at the head of the victorious German army. He was captivated by the breath-taking view and decided to have a replica built in Berlin. Named Kurfürstendamm, the avenue has become one of the German city’s main thoroughfares.
