A reduced distribution

The Hermann's tortoise (Testudo hermanni hermanni) is the only land tortoise in mainland France where its presence is attested by fossil remains dating from around 1.8 million years ago. Its current distribution is reduced to two main population centers. The first one corresponds to a small Provençal nucleus concentrated within the Var department (plain and Massif des Maures, Massif du Colle du Rouet, plateau of Gonfaron-Flassans-sur-Issole). Hermann tortoises are also present in a larger Corsican zone covering the southern coastal areas and the center of the island.
