For centuries, the Normans have partitioned their fields to keep their cattle herds and guarantee the milk production that makes the region's reputation. Such actions give the fields the appearance of a patchwork lined with hedges, fruit trees, and sunken lanes. The Norman bocage is a heritage of the Middle Ages and the culture in joualles (association of several cultures). Because of the rich biodiversity of its bocage, Basse-Normandie (Lower Normandy) has obtained a Regional Nature Park label.
