A region linked to d'Artagnan

Charles de Batz-Castelmore, Comte d'Artagnan (1611 or 1615-1673), is an emblematic figure of Gascony. Its bronze statue, made by Firmin Michelet in 1931, sits at the bottom of a monumental staircase that connects the historic center to the new town of Auch. He was born in Lupiac, at the Château de Castelmore, a few miles away. After D'Artagnan's death on the battlefield of Maastricht, Louis XIV said: I lost d'Artagnan in whom I had complete confidence and who was good for everything.
