Ras Abrouq, at the tip of the Zekreet Peninsula on the west coast, is home to one of the most extensive Neolithic sites in Qatar. Excavations from the second half of the 20th century onwards have revealed a high proportion of Ubaid pottery, as well as Neolithic hearths, cairns, and stone tools. Numerous fish bones and shells were also found. The ensemble bears witness to the seasonal encampments of people who traded with neighbouring tribes. Other remains testify to the recurrent occupation of this area, such as ceramics from the Dilmun civilisation and chambered cairns filled with beads and shells dating from the third millennium BC. During the Sassanid period, around 140 BC, foreign ships had established a fishing station here to dry fish.
