Near Lons-le-Saunier, the plateaus of the Jura Massif cover more than 37 miles (60 km) and dominate the region at an altitude varying between 1,312 and 2,562 ft (400 and 781 m). Some 36% of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region is covered with forests made up of 80% hardwoods and 20% softwoods. They are crossed by paths and tracks created by the passage of animals such as ungulates. The Eurasian Lynx prefers to stay on their edges, as noted by the Centre Athénas involved in its protection.
