Basse Bourgogne, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise, and Mâconnais constitute the five major wine regions of Burgundy. The AOC (Controlled Designation of Origin) system applied to their terroir is particularly precise. In Burgundy, we talk about “climats” (climates), plots that define a wine made only with their grapes. Among the 1,247 “climats” of Burgundy, 562 are protected. The smallest French AOC is “La Romanée”, with a surface of 2 acres (0.85 ha).
