One region, 300 fortifications

Alsace is one of the regions of Europe with the most medieval fortified castles. In the Middle Ages, plain castles represented nearly two-thirds of the 500 listed in Alsace. Almost all of the buildings with significant ruins today are mountain castles. The Haut-Koenigsbourg dominates, with its characteristic silhouette, around 300 fortifications in the region. Few castles are still inhabited, as Haut-Barr or Haut-Andlau, in 1806. Haut-Koenigsbourg is also one of the few to have been rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century.
