On May 4, 1899, the castle of Haut-Koenigsbourg was offered to Wilhelm II of Hohenzollern, emperor of Germany. He wanted to create a museum there to the glory of the germanity of Alsace and, more generally, of the Germanic world. The restoration of Haut-Koenigsbourg lasted from 1901 to 1908. Wilhelm II regularly visited the site and was housed in the station of Saint-Hippolyte, rebuilt especially to accommodate him in 1903. Deposed in 1918, the emperor never slept in the castle.
