A hike between two coves

The Trace des Caps trail runs through the Savane des Pétrifications (Savannah of Petrifications) along 1.5 miles (2.5 km) of the lunar-like desert coastline of this sector of the Sainte-Anne peninsula at the southern end of Martinique. It starts from Anse à Prunes to the west, crosses the small wooden bridge over the Étang des Saline's river and enters the savannah today plundered of all its petrifications. As one progresses, the coast becomes more rugged and the path rises a few meters after Anse Braham. Often assaulted by powerful waves, the cliffs of Pointe d'Enfer precede the aridest part of the route, where erosion has removed all traces of vegetation. Anse Trabaud beach, 1,640 ft (500 m) further on, marks the eastern limit of the Savane des Pétrifications. The return is via an almost direct 0.9 mile (1.5 km) track across a desolate plateau dotted with pipe organ cacti (Pilosocereus royenii). Although the route does not present any technical difficulty - the path being almost flat over its entire length - the heat is often overwhelming due to the absence of shaded areas.
