Protected in international law by the Washington and Bern Conventions, the Hermann's Tortoise (Testudo hermanni hermanni) is also protected in Europe - where it is one of the priority species - and in France where it is on the list of the protected species. In Community law, the reptile is protected within the framework of the Habitat, Fauna and Flora European directive concerning the preservation of the natural habitats of the wild fauna and flora of the member states. Hermann's Tortoises also benefit from the programs of the Natura 2000 environmental network.
