The surroundings of Riquewihr seem to have been occupied since the Neolithic era. Lithic and metallic tools, as well as a polished stone ax, were indeed discovered in the heights of the city in 1895. In 1913, three Merovingian tombs were excavated, as well as sandstone slabs and furniture. Jewels, a damask buckle, and three iron knives dating from the 7th century were also found south of the city. Occupied for hundreds of years, Riquewihr has been a winegrowing city since the 8th century.
