A sarmentous plant

The vine or vine stock is a woody, sarmentous shrub that winegrowers prune in order to harvest fruit in bunches (the grape) which grow on the current year’s shoots. There are many species and varieties of vines, the so-called ‘cépages’. Ideally, a vine is planted in the autumn or early spring. Vines should not grow on land that is too fertile, as the vegetation then develops more than the grapes. The species most commonly cultivated for its grapes is Vitis vinifera. Good fruit requires sun and warmth.
