Fine lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Mill.) grows spontaneously between 1,970 and 5,580 ft (600 and 1700 m) of altitude on the arid, limestone, and stony grounds of Haute-Provence. Its bluish-gray flowers form loose spikes without bracts, and its twigs are bare under the spikes. Its plants constitute 0.6 to 1.9 ft (20 to 60 cm) in diameter tufts whose stems rarely exceed 1.6 ft (50 cm).
