A flowering plant native to the West Indies

Balisier (Heliconia caribaea) is a flowering plant of the Heliconiacea family native to the West Indies - particularly Martinique, Saint-Lucia, Dominica, Guadeloupe, Saint-Martin, and the Amazon region - which earns it the nickname Caribbean balisier. Its red, flattened flower consists of overlapping, upward-opening petals called bracts. Their profile shape is reminiscent of parrot beaks. This perennial plant very common in the cool, wet regions of northern Martinique blooms during the rainy season (March-November) after being pollinated by hummingbirds. The Balisier was chosen by Aimé Césaire to represent the Martinican Progressive Party he founded in 1958.
