Ammonites Beach in Benerville-sur-Mer is a large sandy beach that stretches to Blonville-sur-Mer in the Calvados department. The rocks that border it contain numerous fossils from the Jurassic, when a tropical sea covered Normandy. It is not uncommon to find fossils of ammonites, sea urchins, nautiluses, and shark teeth. A little further, in Villers-sur-Mer in 1778, Abbot Charles Bacheley unearthed the remains of the first dinosaur in France (Streptospondylus), which he took for a large fish.
