The houses of Mirepoix in the Ariège department are organized around the Place des Couverts dating from the 13th century. The galleries where shops are aligned were built in the 15th century and are supported by oak pillars, while horizontal beams support the first floors of the dwellings. The beams of the Maison des Consuls have been carefully sculpted and display highly expressive human heads as well as animals.
