A roman Patrician

Named the ‘Musée des Antiques’ in 1800, the Department of Greek, Etruscan, and Roman Antiquities is one of the oldest in the Louvre. Initially formed by the royal collections, it was subsequently enriched by the collections of Cardinal de Richelieu and Cardinal Mazarin. Revolutionary seizures and captures during the Napoleonic wars contributed as well to this collection. This female bust is a modern reconstruction of a Roman marble statue from the 2nd century AD. Only the head (minus the nose and chin) and the hair are from the Roman period.
