The bocages and orchards of the Pays d'Auge are protected by the Natura 2000 program. The region of Beaumont-en-Auge mostly consists of meadows (70%) and arable land (20.9%). Cultivated fields and meadows are lined with embankments using a tried and tested method from the Middle Ages. Bordered by hedges and apple trees, they guard the livestock and retain the grounds. Home to a significant diversity of birds and small mammals, the bocages and orchards play a major part in Normandy's economy.
