The 300 SL (W198) Butterfly is a two-seater convertible coupe by the German car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz. Following the victories of this model at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and at the Carrera Panamericana in 1952, the American car dealer Max Hoffman asked Mercedes-Benz to produce a road version. Convinced that he could sell the vehicle in the USA, he ordered 1,000 copies. They were sold for 11,000 dollars each from 1954 to 1963, which represented a small fortune. Today, their price exceeds one million euros. Its butterfly or seagull wings doors distinguish the 300 SL from all other sports models, and a copy is visible at the Cité de l'Automobile in Mulhouse.
