A mosaic of habitats

A veritable mosaic of thirty-six habitats, fourteen of which are considered of interest by the European Union, the Salins d'Hyères on the Var coastline have varying rates of salinity and water levels. They explain the diversity of the avifauna that occupies the area. The salt marshes comprise mud beaches suitable for feeding birds, water areas favorable to the installation of macrophyte meadows, and artificial nesting islands. Together, these characteristics allow the Salins d'Hyères to fulfill a triple function of migratory stopover, wintering, and breeding site for the 312 species observed to date.
