Encircled by limestone reliefs, Marseille naturally faces the Mediterranean, as shown in this photo in the rising sun and in the silhouette of the various ridges' lines surrounding the city. In the center, Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde Basilica stands out and dominates Marseille from the top of the 488 ft (149 m) high hill on which it was built between the Roucas Blanc and Vauban districts.
