Mother and cub

Female white rhinos usually raise young alone. After a 16 months gestation, they give birth to one calf, that she nurses for about one year. Unlike black rhinos, the young walks in front of its mother. She directs it using her horn or grumbling.
Although the young rhino is weaned at about one year old, it stays with its mother for about 2 to 3 years, when she mates again. A young male will be chased by its mother, whereas a young female will stay until the birth of the new calf.
