A significant lapidary tradition

Septmoncel les Molunes is located south of the Haut-Jura, 6,21 miles (10 km) above Saint-Claude and 31 miles (50 km) from Geneva (Switzerland). It belongs to the Haut-Jura Regional Nature Park and to the Haut-Jura Saint-Claude community of communes. Not far from the village is the Chapeau du gendarme, a limestone fold whose shape recalls that of the hat of the gendarmes who watched the many smuggling routes during the French Revolution. In the 19th century, stone cutting (lapidary) was a major activity in the region, and nearly 500 lapidary workers were established in Septmoncel les Molunes in 1858.
