A ceramics industry developed in the 17th century

Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, developed a ceramics industry from the 17th century thanks to its large deposits of good quality clay and its environment rich in water and wood to fuel the ovens. Between 1659 and 1668, thirty potters settled in the village. At the end of the 17th century, they discovered enameling, the starting point of the prosperous historical period of Moustiers earthenware which lasted for two hundred years.
