An imposing inauguration

Kaiser Wilhelm II wanted to rebuild the castle of Haut-Koenigsbourg and turn it into a museum glorifying the German medieval world. To symbolize that, he had his coat of arms intertwined with Emperor Charles V's, to whom he claimed to be the heir, on the main gate of the castle. The fortress was inaugurated with great pomp and ceremony on Mai 13, 1908. A procession of 500 people in medieval costumes referred to the taking over the castle by Franz von Sickingen in the 16th century.
