A strategic importance

In the 17th century, despite an outdated defense system, the Haut-Kœnigsbourg castle regained its strategic importance. It controlled one of the main access routes to Alsace, while the region was a major stake in the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648). The Catholic German principalities, supported by the Duke of Lorraine fought against the Protestant principalities, supported by the King of France and the King of Sweden. For the inhabitants of the nearby villages, the castle was a safe refuge from the looters of the different camps.
