On the Var coast, about 656 ft (200 m) in front of Cap du Dramont, the Île d'Or (Golden Island) is recognizable by its square tower in medieval style but of recent construction. Entirely made up of rhyolite, the characteristic red rock of the Estérel massif, this island of 2,706 acres (1,095 ha) is 639 ft long (195 m) and 370 ft wide (113 m) and rises 49 ft (15 m) above sea level. It is said to have inspired Hergé for his album The Black Island.
