An island bordered by a forest

Facing Les Andelys in the Eure department, Château Island is bordered by a riparian forest of ancient white willows (Salix alba). The island is partly inhabited, and its southern side consists of a garden. In the center grow elderberries (Sambucus nigra), brambles (Rubus fruticosus), and blood dogwoods (Cornus sanguineum), while goats rid the island of nettles. The remains of a wall erected by Richard the Lionheart in 1196 are still visible. He lived on Château Island during the construction of Château-Gaillard.
