A tormented history
The traditional houses of Troyes have suffered extensive damage throughout the centuries. They were mostly caused by the numerous fires the city faced. If the rich had the opportunity to rebuild their homes in stone, the poor had no choice but to use the same cheap materials, such as wood or cob. Among all the cities in France that have conserved their half-timbered houses, Troyes has one of the best-preserved and best-restored heritage.
