The history of the Pont du Gard dates back to the first century, when Nîmes was still only a prosperous colony that saw its population approaching 20,000 inhabitants. The fountain of Nemausus began to no longer suffice to supply drinking water to the city, its thermal baths, fountains, and gardens. An aqueduct was, therefore, built to carry water from the Eure spring in Uzès to the region of Nîmes. The Pont du Gard was erected to cross the obstacle formed by the Gardon on the route of the pipelines. The general construction site lasted between 10 and 15 years, while Pont du Gard's required less than five years.
