An painted cave open to the public

The cave of Niaux is one of the last decorated French caves open to the public, showing prehistoric paintings made 14,000 years ago. It also contains many engravings on the floors, specific to the Pyrenees. Fragile, these works cannot be seen on site but have been reproduced in facsimile at the Prehistory Park in Tarascon-sur-Ariège. Researchers' assessments indicate that the cave of Niaux was probably not a place of living as no domestic remains have been found there to date.
