A pilgrimage cave within the massif

0
The Sainte-Baume massif stretches between the Bouches-du-Rhône and Var departments over 21.7 mi (35 km) long and 9.3 mi (15 km) wide, about 12.4 mi (20 km) from the Mediterranean coast. It rises to 3766 ft (1,148 m) at the Joug de l'Aigle. The massif owes its name to the cave (bauma/baumo in Provençal, from the Gallic balma) of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, more commonly called Sainte-Baume, which was a major place of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages. The buildings on the side of the cliff still visible around the cave testify to the presence of a large guesthouse intended to accommodate the many pilgrims and various religious communities.
