The common frog (Pelophylax kl. Esculentus) is an edible amphibian that results from the hybridization between the small green frog (Pelophylax lessonae) and the laughing frog (Pelophylax ridibundus). Endemic to Europe, its area of distribution extends from France to southern Sweden and Russia. The common frog is absent from more southern regions such as southern Italy and the Balkans.
