The lakes of Longemer and Gérardmer have glacial valleys barred by complexes of moraines and deltas. They are dated before and after the glaciation. Twice a year, the blooming of the plankton accompanies the movements of the water masses. The spring and fall seasonal changes bring up nutrients and oxygenate the deep layers. Winter freeze-up is getting shorter over the years and rarely exceeds two months. The consequences are thinner ice that hardly reaches 6 in (15 cm) today.
