The castle of Châteauneuf is a former 12th century fortified castle - of which only the keep remains today - gradually transformed by the lords of Châteauneuf into a fortress typical of the Burgundian military architecture of the time. This 246 feet (75 meters) long and 114 feet (35 meters) wide fortress, built on a rocky outcrop at an altitude of 1,558 feet (475 meters), protected the southern end of the Auxois. It is flanked by massive towers and wide ditches which were crossed by a drawbridge.
