The Fort de Brégançon became a state property from the French Revolution of 1789 and initially retained its function as a military fortress. Napoléon Bonaparte, then inspector of the coasts, stayed there during the winter of 1793-1794. In 1799, as a first consul, he had it repaired and equipped with significant artillery and, once emperor, reinforced its garrison. After the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, the Ministry of War undertook major work to install modern artillery pieces and a powder magazine. During World War I, the Fort de Brégançon was last occupied by a small garrison before being decommissioned in 1919 but nevertheless requisitioned by a German company during World War II.
