The fountain of the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville in Aix-en-Provence was built in 1756. In 1789, during the French Revolution, the city was organized into districts determined from the fountain. Classic in style, it is composed of a polygonal basin supporting a Roman column from the ruins of the Count's palace. Its water, coming from the Pinchinats spring and channeled via the Roman aqueduct, flows through four macaroons symbolizing hygiene following the plague of 1720.
